Once you’ve booked your holiday, you might wonder what clothing to pack for the Baltic cruise. After all – you’re going to several different destinations, the weather might be changeable – so what to wear?

In general, there are two top tips for what is appropriate.

Firstly, Jeans are usually fine wherever you go (unless you’re going to somewhere particularly formal on a shore visit, or dining in an upmarket area of your ship). So, take a couple of pairs of denims – that should be enough to get you through most cruise excursions.

Secondly, you’re are likely to end up walking – possibly over cobbled streets, or other non-smooth surfaces. So take appropriate footwear – a stout pair of walking shoes, trainers, and/or a pair of walking sandals. You’ll have plenty of opportunity to dress up, if that’s what you want – but make sure you don’t just pack stilettos and flip flops.

Otherwise, what you should pack depends on when you are visiting the Baltic.

The warmest months in the Baltic are May, June, July, August and September. July and August tend to be both the busiest and the warmest.

If you’re visiting in these months, then take some light clothing to wear if the weather is fine – shorts and t-shirts for men, and, if preferred, dresses and skirts for women. But remember that, even in the finest months, the weather can be changeable from day to day and port to port. So plan for some rainy days and pack an umbrella or waterproofs. You should also pack a fleece or light jacket, in case of overcast days or a cool wind.

Of course, it’s not unknown for the day to begin being gloriously sunny and end in pouring rain, or vice versa. Very cunning tourists pack capsule wardrobes of light clothes that can be worn in layers. It is good to have a light rain poncho in your pocket when going on land excursions. Some tour companies foresee the changeable weather and provide their clients with rain ponchos.

If you’re visiting during the winter months, then you will need jeans and sturdy shoes, but also clothes that will help you to cope with the cold. Thermal underwear, mittens, hats, scarves, and a heavy coat are the proper gear. Many establishments that you may want to visit – restaurants, bars, museums - have cloakrooms where you can leave your outer gear.

There are some specific occasions that you may want to dress up for. If you are going to the theatre or the opera, then it’s a good idea to dress appropriately. You don’t need to go for a floor length gown or three piece suit, but you should look reasonably smart.

Your cruise ship may also have rules on attire – for example, some ships require male guests to wear a tie if they’re eating in a formal dining area. You can check most of these rules online, or in a brochure, before you sail.

If it turns out that you have forgotten something, or the weather is unusually cold or warm, then don’t worry. All of the cities you will visit have superb shops – which is a reason in itself to pack light!
